A graduate of Emerson College in Boston, Tony Pietra Arjuna began in the Malaysian entertainment industry as an offline editor for TV commercials in Asia Pacific Videolab and Mirage Post. He steadily honed his directing craft with low-budget music videos and short films, before landing his first opportunity in local TV production with Niche Films (Spinning Gasing). Under this company, he directed episodes of an Astro anthology series titled Dark City plus one made-for-television feature (Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban). These were followed by episodes for two seasons of Popiah Pictures’ Ghost, an 8TV supernatural series that won the Special Jury Award at the 2010 Seoul International Drama Awards.
Tony has since directed a variety of long-form and short-form projects for several production companies, such as Filmpoint, Pixel Play (Kolumpo) and Rack Focus Films.
With the latter, he co-created the true-crime magazine show Motif and co-directed the documentaries Al-Maunah : The Malaysian Arms Heist and A Brotherhood of Bandits for History Channel and Crime & Investigation Network, respectively. Tony then directed the Malaysian chapter for an upcoming indie-international production (Collbfeature : The Train Station).
Tony recently directed the neo-noir thriller segment of Garang Pictures’ omnibus feature Cuak. The film opened theatrically on February 14, 2014 and was the opening selection at the Johor Bahru Film Festival 2015. Cuak was recently nominated for the “Best Non-Malay Film” award at this year’s Festival Filem Malaysia. Tony is currently developing a full-length directorial effort, Shadowplay, a high-concept detective mystery with psychological horror elements.
